Parent Pleas

Child psychiatrists might easily misread the above title as “Parent, please!” due to the helplessness we feel after realizing no amount of medication or individual talk therapy can change the all-powerful home dynamic. Assuming parents are doing the best they can, but they need to (and can do) better with additional support provides a helpful reframe, á la Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Likewise, Collaborative Problem Solving, Ross Greene and Stuart Ablon’s evidence-based approach to helping kids with behavior issues, reminds us that “challenging kids lack the skill, not the will, to behave well.”1
