The clinical prognostic value of LRG1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

The clinical prognostic value of LRG1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Curr Cancer Drug Targets. 2019 Feb 03;: Authors: Wang Y, Xing Q, Chen X, Wang J, Guan S, Chen X, Sun P, Wang M, Cheng Y Abstract BACKGROUND: Leucine-rich-alpha-2-glycoprotein1 (LRG1) is a new oncogene-related gene, which has been verified important to the development and poor prognosis of human cancers. However, whether it participates in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) progression remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression level and functional influence of LRG1 in ESCC. METHOD: The expression of LRG1 was evaluated on the mRNA and protein level in ESCC patients. Then, correlation of LRG1 expression with clinicpathological variables was analyzed in ESCC. Besides, to clarify the biological function of LRG1, Eca109 and KYSE150 cells were transfected with LRG1 shRNA, the cell viability, clonal efficiency, apoptosis and invasion assays in vitro were performed. RESULTS: LRG1 was significantly over-expressed in ESCC and related to deeper invasion depth (T stage) and distal metastasis (M stage). Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that LRG1 up-regulation in ESCC was closely correlated to worse clinical survival (overall survival and progression-free survival), all P

Authors: Tsunoda M, Miura Y, Osawa H, Khurelbaatar T, Sakaguchi M, Fukuda H, Lefor AK, Yamamoto H Abstract A 62-year-old man with a flat early esophageal cancer was referred for endoscopic treatment. White light imaging revealed a pale red lesion, whereas linked color imaging (LCI) and blue laser imaging (BLI) yielded purple and brown images, respectively. Iodine staining demonstrated a large unstained area with a homogenous but very weak pink-color sign. This area appeared more clearly as purple and green on LCI and BLI, respectively; however, a different colored portion was observed at the 4 o'clock position insi...

This study evaluated the relationship of multimodality parameters derived from intravoxel incoherent motion method (IVIM), 18F- FDG-PET, CT perfusion and dynamic contrast enhanced MRI in patients with gastro- esophageal cancer and investigated their histopathological correlation. METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive patients (28 male; median age 63.9 years; range 37-84 years) with gastro-esophageal adenocarcinoma (n=22) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (n=9) were analyzed. IVIM parameters: pseudodiffusion (D*), perfusion fraction (fp), true diffusion (D) and the threshold b-value (bval); PET-parameters: SUVmax, metabo...

Conclusions The positive trends in the survival rate for esophageal patients could be due to adoption of multimodal therapy. Despite a lower proportion of advanced disease among patients over 80, they received less curative treatments compared with other age groups. Further studies are required to identify strategies to maximize survival for patients with stage IV disease, and patients 80 years and older.

This study assessed the risk factors of fistula based on clinical information on patients with chemoradiotherapy for T4-EC.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 59 T4-EC patients who had squamous cell carcinoma without any fistula before receiving definitive or palliative chemoradiotherapy.ResultsA fistula was observed in 18 patients (31%) throughout their clinical course. The overall survival in the fistula group was significantly shorter than that in the non-fistula group (259 vs. 346  days;p = 0.0341). The axial tumor size on computed tomography (CT) was confirmed as an independent r...

ConclusionsOur results suggest that UTP14a is aberrantly expressed in ESCC, plays a critical role in cancer progression and could be a potential prognosis predictor of ESCC.

Authors: Chen FF, Zhang SR, Peng H, Chen YZ, Cui XB Abstract The main purpose of the present study was to recognize the integrative genomics analysis of hub genes and their relationship with prognosis and signaling pathways in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The mRNA gene expression profile data of GSE38129 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, which included 30 ESCC and 30 normal tissue samples. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between ESCC and normal samples were identified using the GEO2R tool. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pat...

It is important to understand the sites and the frequency of metastasis to perform less invasive treatments for superficial esophageal cancer, such as minimized or focused lymphadenectomy, endoscopic resection, and chemoradiotherapy. The distribution pattern and frequency of metastases from superficial esophageal cancer, however, have not been well elucidated.
