Psychiatric Disorders and Weight Change in a Prospective Study of Bariatric Surgery Patients: 7 Years of Follow-up
Although bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity, resulting in long-term weight loss and improvements in obesity-related comorbid conditions[1-5] and health-related quality of life,[6-8] a substantial proportion of patients experience inadequate weight loss or significant weight regain.[9] Patterns of weight change vary by surgical procedure and among patients who have the same procedure.[10] Weight regain may be caused by operation-specific or patient-specific (mental health, health-related behaviors, endocrinopathies/metabolic) factors.
