Measuring Diagnostic Radiologists: What Measurements Should We Use?

For years, radiologists (and their administrators) have been attempting to measure diagnostic radiologist performance [1]. The premise is that patients must be protected from practitioners who deviate from standards of care, and identifying suboptimal individual outliers will in some way provide information that can be used to remediate performance. Such logic has engendered regulatory requirements, such as those of the Joint Commission, that expect provider-level quality assurance data to be reported and acted upon for all physicians [2].
