ConclusionThe occurrence of carotid plaques in asymptomatic individuals is underestimated by ultrasound compared to plaque assessment by CTA. Carotid plaque composition by CTA is different in individuals with and without carotid plaques by ultrasound.Key Points•The occurrence of carotid plaques by ultrasound was underestimated in 46% of participants who had plaques by carotid CTA.•Participants with carotid plaques by ultrasound had higher volumes of all plaque subtypes and a higher calcified plaque component as determined by carotid CTA compared to participants without carotid plaques by ultrasound.•A high c...

PP Batchala, PK RehmJournal of Postgraduate Medicine 2019 65(4):237-240 A 66-year-old female underwent preoperative evaluation for primary hyperparathyroidism. Ultrasound (US) neck and technetium (Tc)-99m-sestamibi planar scintigraphy were negative, but single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) demonstrated a tracer-avid retropharyngeal nodule compatible with parathyroid adenoma (PTA). A retrospective review of CT neck angiogram (CTA) and neck magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed 4 months earlier for stroke evaluation revealed arterial phase hyperenhancing retropharyngeal tissue, whic...

Carotid artery web has been frequently reported. However, the vertebral artery web has been less reported. It is difficult and seldom to diagnose vertebral artery web with noninvasive examinations. Here, we present a case of asymptomatic vertebral artery web diagnosed by ultrasound and confirmed by digital subtraction angiography.

Abstract OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate the effectiveness of colour duplex ultrasound (CDU) plus contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) vs. computed tomography angiography (CTA) for surveillance in patients with isolated mesenteric artery dissection (IMAD). METHODS: Patients who underwent CDU, CEUS, and CTA for surveillance of IMAD between January 2012 and May 2019 were included in the study. The accuracy of CDU, CEUS, and CTA for determining the morphological characteristics of IMAD was analysed. RESULTS: A total of 42 patients undergoing 76 total imaging examinations during follow up were included...

Abstract Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) is a rare, heritable disorder caused by variants in the SRCAP gene. Most individuals with FHS have characteristic facial features, short stature, and speech and language impairment. Although FHS has been likely under-diagnosed due to a combination of lack of recognition of the clinical phenotype and limited access to genomic testing, it is a rare condition with around 100 individuals reported in the medical literature. Case series have been biased towards younger individuals (vast majority

The interest for the clinical diagnosis of vulnerable plaques(VP) boosted 3 decades ago with the widespread use of intracoronary imaging(ICI). Initially, intravascular ultrasound(IVUS) provided novel insights on plaque characteristics impossible to recognized by angiography [1]. IVUS was able to visualize the entire vessel wall readily assessing plaque morphology and composition together with remodeling phenomena[1]. Subsequently, virtual histology(VH), another ultrasound-based technique, demonstrated its value to gain further insights on plaque composition using a more sophisticated analysis of the radiofrequency signal [2].

This is by one of ouroutstanding 3rd year residents, Aaron Robinson, with some edits and comments by SmithEMS responded to a reported seizure in a 42 year old male. Per bystanders, he went down after some intense sporting activity, and had “shaking” type movement. He reports no personal or familial history of seizures. One of our EMS Fellows along with a Senior EM Resident were on duty that evening, and arrived on the scene with the Fire Department. When the physicians approached him, he was ashen, diaphoretic, and appeared in shock. Fire was able to obtain a BP of 60/palp and a pulse in the 40s. The physicians ...

CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous infusion of MSCs inhibited the inflammatory reaction to an implanted stent strut, and prevented progressive neointimal hyperplasia in the stented CCA and SCA in a porcine model. Thus, MSC treatment could attenuate the recurrence of cerebral ischemic events after stenting. PMID: 31585431 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
