Feeding during the first period after the birth is not only significant for improvement of preterm infants’ current medical condition, but it also affects the quality of their life in the future. Therefore issues concerning feeding of premature infants are the subject of guidelines and position of ESPGHAN and AAP. These recommendations refer not only to the required supply of dietary components, but also to fortification of human milk as the “gold standard” in feeding intensively treated premature newborn. The requirement of fortification of breast milk results from dietary special needs of this group of patients, which are widely discussed in recommendations quoted in the article. The decision concerning fortification of mother's milk must be taken based on biochemical analysis of composition of human milk or other examination allows to assess metabolic activity of the newborn (e.g. blood urea nitrogen) and should be part of a long-term plan for feeding premature infants.
