CONCLUSIONS: STIs and other microbes can induce inflammation in the genital tract, perturbing the normal robust function of the mucosal barrier against HIV. While the impact of STIs on the mucosal immune system and HIV acquisition is often under-appreciated, understanding their interactions of the infections with the immune responses play an important role in improving treatment and reducing the risk of HIV acquisition. The frequent sub-clinical inflammation associated with STIs underscores the need for better STI diagnostics to reverse the immunological consequences of infection. Human papillomavirus (HPV) presents tropism for the skin and mucous membranes and produces a variety of afflictions. There are available many studies on the role of oxidative stress in HPV-associated cervical cancer; however data on cutaneous lesions is scarce. In recent years, it has been highlighted that lipid peroxidation is an important step in the pathogenesis of many diseases. We have enrolled 26 patients with palmoplantar warts, 15 patients with genital warts and 28 healthy subjects. To determine the level of lipid peroxidation we have measured the serum levels of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) by ELISA method.

Genital human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection. It may be asymptomatic or manifests as benign or malignant lesions. The pathogenesis of HPV infection is not completely elucidated; in most cases spontaneous viral clearance occurs. In our study we have investigated the effect of HPV infection on the balance between oxidants and antioxidants in patients with genital warts. We have determined the serum levels of soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE), total oxidant status (TAS) and total antioxidant status (TOS) in 15 patients with genital warts and 28 healthy subjects.

Uterine fibroids are characterized by abnormal cell proliferation and apoptosis, leading to excessive growth and secretion of an altered extracellular matrix (ECM). A key signaling pathway controlling cell proliferation and apoptosis is the Salvador/Warts/Hippo pathway. Hippo signaling is mediated by the TEA domain family member (TEAD)/Yes-associated protein (YAP)/(transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) transcription factors. Verteporfin, a benzoporphyrin derivative, is known to inhibit the interaction between TEAD and YAP/TAZ.

AbstractIn the U.S. there is an epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs). One of the most prevalent STIs is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Certain high risk strains of HPV are believed to cause virtually all cervical cancers, over 90% of anal cancers, 70% of oropharyngeal cancers, and the majority of anal  genital warts. HPV is preventable through vaccination and is available for both men and women. Several educational interventions have been employed, yet baseline awareness and knowledge related to HPV and 9vHPV remains relatively low among young men. What is not known is the most effective method for provid...
