An Undetected Case of Tinea Capitis in an Elderly Woman Affected by Dermatomyositis: How Trichoscopy Can Guide to the Right Diagnosis

We report a case of tinea capitis (TC) in a 79-year-old woman affected by DM with scalp involvement which did not respond to conventional therapies. Thanks to trichoscopy we could detect “comma hairs,” “zigzag hairs,” and “pigtail hairs” at scalp examination, made the right diagnosis of TC, and instituted the best treatment without delay.Skin Appendage Disord

Conclusion: IgG4-related autoimmune disease should be considered in the diagnosis of patients who have tubulointerstitial nephritis with multisystem involvement. Further, mCRP autoantibodies may be associated with IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis and might be useful as a diagnostic marker of the disease. PMID: 31296087 [PubMed - in process]

Material and methods: Male F344 rats received either no levofloxacin (n = 9), intravenous levofloxacin (n = 12), oral levofloxacin (n = 12), or subcutaneous levofloxacin (n = 14). Rats received a clinically applicable dose (5.56 mg/kg) of levofloxacin via the assigned delivery route once daily for three days....

In conclusion, deficiencies in key immune inhibitory proteins may promote the occurrence of autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune hepatitis, and emerging interventions may overcome these deficiencies. Investigations should define the nature, impact and management of these inhibitory disturbances in autoimmune hepatitis. PMID: 31298041 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: In this large population-based cohort study, birth weight and childhood growth did not influence risk of IBD, which contrasts with observations in other chronic diseases. Thereby, the study also suggests that pre-clinical effects of adult IBD are not measurable in childhood and that childhood risk factors for IBD do not influence growth. Authors: Shono A, Mori S, Nakamura K, Yatomi A, Takada H, Tanaka H, Okano T, Morinobu A, Hirata KI Abstract An 80-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis presented with chest pain. Clinical examination revealed new-onset paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with symptomatic sinus pauses and worsening mitral regurgitation, which were both resistant to conventional therapies. Based on her skin lesions, an increase in pleural and pericardial effusion, possible myocardial involvement, and a positive finding for immune complex testing, rheumatoid vasculitis was diagnosed. Subsequent glucocorticoid therapy suppressed systemic...

Authors: Tabata S, Higuchi T, Tatsukawa S, Narimatsu K, Takeo H, Matsukuma S, Ito T Abstract Idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder, and only a few cases have been reported to be complicated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). A 43-year-old man who presented with multiple swollen lymph nodes was diagnosed with iMCD. He was also diagnosed with AIHA based on laboratory findings, including the results of a bone marrow aspiration study. The patient was treated with tocilizumab; however, the effect was limited, probably due to anti-drug antibodies. Tocilizumab was th...
