The influence of staple height on postoperative complication rates after laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery using linear staplers.

Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a safe and effective treatment for morbid obesity [1 –4] with a current worldwide figure of almost 200 000 procedures performed each year [5]. Postoperative complications, however, still occur and can result in serious morbidity for a number of patients [6]. Although some preoperative risk factors are known to be associated with increased risk for complication, intraoperative factors appear to be associated with the highest risk [1,7]. The staple height of the circular stapler used for gastroenterostomy has been reported to influence the risk for postoperative complication [8–11].
