Use of ProtekDuo as Veno-arterial and Veno-venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation During Bilateral Lung Transplantation

END-STAGE PULMONARY hypertension and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction are common in patients presenting for orthotopic lung transplantation (LT), occurring in approximately 25% of patients referred for LT.1,2 It therefore is prudent to consider hemodynamic support options in this population. Cardiopulmonary support may be required in 30% to 40% of patients undergoing LT, although this may vary by institutional practice and individual patient risk factors.3 –6 This extracorporeal support may be indicated in cases of pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular (RV) failure, or the inability to tolerate one lung ventilation with inadequate gas exchange leading to severe hypoxemia or hypercapnia.
