Hyaluronic acid filler injection is generally regarded a safe procedure. However, serious ischemic complications do exist, notably blindness and skin necrosis. Hyaluronidase is an enzymatic reversal agent for hyaluronic acid fillers; it is used to treat acute ischemic complications. Unfortunately, many barriers exist for injector sites to stock hyaluronidase, including price, short shelf-life, and complacency given the low incidence of ischemic complications. As a result, emergency rooms (ERs) are often expected to be a safety net in cases when injectors encounter an ischemic complication but have inadequate supplies of hy...

We report on a 52-year-old woman with breast cancer admitted in our institution for onycholysis. Because of the stage and histology of breast cancer, neoadjuvant chemotherapy was initiated. The patient received 8 cycles of Taxotere and Adriamycin (AT), and she underwent a modified radical mastectomy. Three months later, the patient developed evidence of onycholysis, involving all the fingernails. We observed the following changes in nails of all the digits in both hands: onycholysis, dystrophy, oedema, and exudate. Nail scraping and purulent discharge were collected and cultured on Sabouraud medium. Physical features of th...

This study aimed to highlight the COVID-19 response by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Government of Malaysia in order to share Malaysia’s lessons and to improve future pandemic preparedness. The team conducted a rapid review using publicly available information from MOH, PubMed, and World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Research on Coronavirus Disease Database to compile Malaysia’s responses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Measures taken between 31 December 2019 and 3 June 2020 were classified into domains as well as the pillars described in the WHO COVID-19 Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (WHO SP...

This study was intended to improve and prolong its ocular availability. FL niosomal vesicles were prepared using span 60. Also, polymeric nanoparticles were prepared using cationic Eudragit RS100 and Eudragit RL100. The investigated particles had adequate entrapment efficiency (EE%), nanoscale particle size and high zeta potential. Subsequently, formulations were optimized using full factorial design. FL-HP-beta-cyclodextrin (FL-HP-β-CD) complex was encapsulated in selected Eudragit nanoprticles (FL-CD-ERS1) and niosmal vesicles. The niosomes were further coated with cationic and bioadhesive chitosan (FL-CD-Nios-ch). ...

CONCLUSION: The key element in the diagnosis of mycotic keratitis is clinical suspicion on the part of the ophthalmologist. However, because of the potential serious complications, it is essential to identify the exact pathogen so as to initiate appropriate treatment in time and to thus improve the prognosis of this condition. Growing up during the 1970’s and 80’s, Little House on the Prairie was an iconic part of my childhood.  Doc Baker was the physician and veterinarian for all of Walnut Grove, in spite of limited resources.  Medical lessons were everywhere in the beloved television series:  Mary experiencing onset of blindness (most recently attributed to viral meningoencephalitis, likely from measles), the death of Laura’s infant son by unknown cause, and Rose’s survival after smallpox infection. When patients ask me how to start solid foods, how to get a baby to sleep through the night, or how to trea...
