The year 2018 celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first implanted pacemaker. During those 60 years, many considerable developments in the therapy for cardiac pacing were made. Current devices are complex and sophisticated. They have many algorithms intended to emulate normal cardiac physiology, with remote management and wireless communication representing the standard of care. However, conventional pacing with implanted generators and leads placed in the vasculature to the heart are associated with significant short- and long-term complications.
