Instead, I think the general principle that has served me well is to ensure that every project I work on offers intentional value: I am passionate about it directly, or it is a conduit to other projects I care about deeply, or I will gain a new skill set by participating. Sánchez, MD, MPH, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School The one experience that had the biggest impact on my career was witnessing how much departmental attention and value was assigned to a peer-reviewed publication. As a data analyst, I remember sitting at a departmental meeting and seeing how departmental leadership and faculty were interested in discussing new ideas but showed great enthusiasm, spent more time, and explored opportunities differently (e.g., a second article, funding, possible interventions) regarding content published by a faculty member. At that moment I learned that, to be heard optimally, I needed to carry my message (or a community’s message) through a publication. More importantly a publication could guarantee an opportunity to discuss a historically ‘invisible’ or ‘taboo’ topic in a somewhat invited fashion.  Indirectly, it enhanced my self-efficacy to unveil topics of marginalized communities that I was a part of–...
