Heart rate variability and performance of commercial airline pilots during flight simulations - Cao X, MacNaughton P, Cadet LR, Cedeno-Laurent JG, Flanigan S, Vallarino J, Donnelly-McLay D, Christiani DC, Spengler JD, Allen JG.

Pilots undergo a variety of stressors that may affect their performance during all phases of flight. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been considered as a reliable indicator of the parasympathetic and sympathetic activities of human autonomic nervous syste...

Work-related stress can induce a break in homeostasis by placing demands on the body that are met by the activation of two different systems, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. Night-shift work alters the body's exp...

This study deals with the coordination of bilateral synchronous and asynchronous hand movements. Cooperative hand movements (e.g. opening a bottle) were shown to be coordinated by a neural coupling, reflected in the appearance of reflex responses in forearm muscles of both sides to unilateral arm nerve stimulation. The mechanical effect of this neural coupling was investigated during bilateral synchronous and asynchronous sinusoidal tracking tasks. During the synchronous tracking task, right handed corrective movements were mirrored by the left hand, suggesting a neural coupling. During the asynchronous tracking task, larg...

ConclusionThis is the largest cohort of CDSRR from a single ethnic background. Rod dysfunction and reduced 30-Hz flicker response were demonstrated in all patients. In contrast to previous descriptions in the literature, a supernormal combined dark-adapted rod-cone ERG was present in the majority of the patients at standard stimulus intensity. Considering the consistent genotype and the demonstration of likely pathogenic genetic variants in all the patients, we argue that the combination of delayed rod b-wave and subnormal flicker response strongly suggests the diagnosis of CDSRR.

This study is a 48-week, one-center (only Kanazawa University Hospital), open-label, randomized, parallel trial. Patients who satisfied the eligibility criteria were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive once-daily 20  mg tofogliflozin or 0.5 mg glimepiride. The sample size was calculated to be 14 in each group with a significance level of 0.05 and power of 0.90. The design required 40 evaluable patients in this study. The primary endpoint of this study will be the improvement in liver histology between liver b iopsies at baseline and after 48 weeks of treatment. The secondary efficacy endpoints in the present ...

The objective of this study was to enhance the quantitative understanding of DMD disease progression through nonlinear mixed effects modeling of the population mean and variability of the 6-min walk test (6MWT) clinical endpoint. An indirect response model with a latent process was fit to digitized literature data using full Bayesian estimation. The modeling data set consisted of 22 healthy controls and 218 DMD patients from one interventional and four observational trials. The model reasonably described the central tendency and population variability of the 6MWT in healthy subjects and DMD patients. An exploratory categor...

We present the case of a 37-year-old asymptomatic female who underwent right ovarian cystectomy for a mature cystic teratoma and was found to have an intra-tumoral paraganglioma. More research is needed to determine metastatic potential as well as the likelihood of recurrence of these unique neoplasms.

Conclusion: Here, we found fatty infiltration present in most Chinese DM1 patients with a selective involvement pattern. There is a correlation between the total mean score of fatty infiltration and MIRS grading, age and disease duration. PMID: 31951783 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AlFaris, Ghasan Elhissi, Aziza Chedrawi, Mohammad Al-MuhaizeaAbstractRecessive congenital methemoglobinemia (RCM) is a rare neurological disorder caused by a deficiency in NADH-CYB5R. RCM has two main types I&II, with cyanosis being the hallmark feature in both. Type-I is a mild form, with cyanosis being the only feature. While type-II is the severe form with prominent neurological symptoms including, dystonia and spasticity. However, the cyanosis is subtle and difficult to appreciate. The...
