Fish oil lipid emulsion to prevent cholestasis in preterm infants

Prolonged parenteral nutrition using a soy-based lipid emulsion is thought to play a role in the development of cholestasis in premature infants.1,2 Previous studies have demonstrated a reversal of parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis (PNAC) in both term and preterm infants after switching infants to a fish oil-based lipid preparation.3-5
