‘ Planetary Health Diet ’ : Scientists Say Cutting Red Meat, Sugar Can Save Lives And The Planet

(CNN) — An international team of scientists has developed a diet it says can improve health while ensuring sustainable food production to reduce further damage to the planet. The “planetary health diet” is based on cutting red meat and sugar consumption in half and upping intake of fruits, vegetables and nuts. And it can prevent up to 11.6 million premature deaths without harming the planet, says the report published Wednesday in the medical journal The Lancet. The authors warn that a global change in diet and food production is needed as 3 billion people across the world are malnourished — which includes those who are under and overnourished — and food production is overstepping environmental targets, driving climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The world’s population is set to reach 10 billion people by 2050; that growth, plus our current diet and food production habits, will “exacerbate risks to people and planet,” according to the authors. “The stakes are very high,” Dr. Richard Horton, editor in chief at The Lancet, said of the report’s findings, noting that 1 billion people live in hunger and 2 billion people eat too much of the wrong foods. Horton believes that “nutrition has still failed to get the kind of political attention that is given to diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria.” “Using best available evidence” of controlled feeding studies, randomized trials...

SordilloAbstractDuring the transition from late gestation to early lactation, dairy cattle are at increased risk for disease. Herd-level monitoring for disease risk involves evaluating multiple factors, including food intake, cow density, and biomarkers of nutrient metabolism. Biomarkers that are measured include non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), which are usually measured in a subset of the herd (i.e. cohort). If a certain proportion...

Authors: Shi L, Feng L, Zhang M, Li X, Yang Y, Zhang Y, Ni Q Abstract Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Many trials have shown that Abelmoschus manihot could further improve proteinuria and protect kidney function in patients with DN when added to a renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blocker. A systematic assessment of the efficacy and safety of A. manihot in DN is essential. Eight electronic databases were searched to identify eligible trials published from inception to December 2017. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality of eligi...

Authors: Zhu J, Xing G, Shen T, Xu G, Peng Y, Rao J, Shi R Abstract Backgrounds: Prediabetes is a condition in which a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal physiological levels but lower compared to patients with diabetes. Up to 70% of individuals with prediabetes will eventually develop diabetes. To date, there have been no pharmaceutical drugs to treat diabetes. It is believed that early diagnosis and nonpharmacological intervention for prediabetes are critical for effective prevention of diabetes. Most individuals with prediabetes remain undiagnosed even after being evaluated using the standard t...

Authors: Vigna L, Morelli F, Agnelli GM, Napolitano F, Ratto D, Occhinegro A, Di Iorio C, Savino E, Girometta C, Brandalise F, Rossi P Abstract Epidemiological data indicate that subjects affected by obesity have an increased risk of developing mood disorders. The relationship between obesity and mood disorders is bidirectional. We assessed whether a Hericium erinaceus treatment improved depression, anxiety, sleep, and binge eating disorders after 8 weeks of supplementation in subjects affected by overweight or obesity under a low calorie diet regimen. Looking for a possible clinical biomarker, we assessed the seru...

Authors: Zhou YX, Zhang RQ, Rahman K, Cao ZX, Zhang H, Peng C Abstract Geniposide is a well-known iridoid glycoside compound and is an essential component of a wide variety of traditional phytomedicines, for example, Gardenia jasminoides Elli (Zhizi in Chinese), Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. (Duzhong in Chinese), Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. (Dihuang in Chinese), and Achyranthes bidentata Bl. (Niuxi in Chinese). It is also the main bioactive component of Gardeniae Fructus, the dried ripe fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. Increasing pharmacological evidence supports multiple medicinal properties of geniposide including...

In this study, the structural and photophysical properties of 2-ethoxy-fluoro phenyl boronic acid (BA1) fluorescent compound was analysed using experimental spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques and theoretical calculations were implemented using DFT and TD-DFT methods. The complete vibrational assignments of wave numbers were made on the basis of potential energy distribution (PED). The calculated HOMO-LUMO energies shows charge transfer within the molecule and the transitions were predicted to be as п-п∗. Besides, frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), UV&...
