Blister fluid could help diagnose burn severity

(American Chemical Society) Severe burns can leave physical and psychological scars, especially in children. When a burn patient enters the clinic, doctors use factors such as the depth and size of the burn, as well as the time required for skin healing--or re-epithelialization--to determine the best course of treatment. Now, researchers reporting in ACS' Journal of Proteome Research have found another, possibly more accurate way to classify burn severity: analyzing proteins in blister fluid.

Pig skin isn ’t just for football these days.  Massachusetts General Hospital surgeons have successfully used genetically engineered pig skin for the temporary closure of a burn wound, the first time pig tissue derived from an animal with gene edits has been transplanted directly onto a human wound.  The F DA-cleared phase one clinical trial was led by surgeon Dr. Jeremy Goverman of MGH's Sumner Redstone Burn Center.  “It is not the trial itself that is so mind-boggling and intriguing to…

We aimed to compare function and aesthetics of retroauricular full thickness skin grafts (FTSG) to plantar glabrous split thickness skin grafts (STSG).Methods32 palmar grafts in paediatric burn patients were analysed: 19 retroauricular FTSG (group 1) and 13 thick plantar glabrous STSG (group 2). The latter were harvested at a thickness of 0.5 mm. The resulting plantar donor defec...

I burnt out as a GP but in mental health I could take time with patients and, at last, make a difference“If you’re going to reject me, then reject me,” I said. I was deep in the bowels of Leicester University, being interviewed for a place at medical school. I was 35, a fact the learned professor interviewing me returned to again and again. How would I cope with the workload? Would the four hour s’ driving each day prove too much? How would I support myself through my studies? Concerns that travelled through my own mind. Unlike the questions I asked myself, though, the queries in that interview room...

The two step anodizing process is optimized for obtaining uniform and ordered nanotubular structures, that are then annealed in air or reduced in an Ar/H2 environment....
