Can acupuncture be used to treat peripheral neuropathy?

(Natural News) Your central nervous system consists of your brain and your spinal cord, while your peripheral nervous system connects these to the rest of your body. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when your peripheral nervous system malfunctions, causing weakness, numbness, feelings of “pins and needles,” and pain in your body. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy,...

From Sept. 2016-Sept. 2018, 214 consecutive pats underwent a complete evaluation by both an MD and a Board Certified Myofascial Trigger point Therapist at one pain clinic.  Of the 214, 133 pts (62%) had a medial foot column disorder ranging form Morton's Toe  (short first metatarsal or primus metatarsus elevatus) to Rothbart's Foot  (incomplete unwinding of talus).  The most common complaints of the 133 pts were back pain in 37  and leg, knee, or hip pain in 29.  Only 14 pts had foot pain, 5 of whom also had peripheral neuropathy.

Abstract Chronic neuropathic pain is a debilitating condition that remains challenging to treat. Glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists have been used to treat neuropathic pain, but the exact sites of their actions have been unclear until recently. Although conventionally postsynaptic, NMDARs are also expressed presynaptically, particularly at the central terminals of primary sensory neurons, in the spinal dorsal horn. However, presynaptic NMDARs in the spinal cord are normally quiescent and are not actively involved in physiological nociceptive transmission. In this review, we describe the em...

DISCUSSION:: We observed no difference between sham and real ST CIPN treatment. Potential reasons include at least the following: ST does not work; the sham treatment had some effect; small sample size with heterogeneous patients; misplaced electrodes on an area of nonpainful but damaged nerves; or a combination of these factors. PalecekAbstractAimsNeuroinflammatory changes in the central nervous system are widely involved in the initiation and maintenance of neuropathic pain after peripheral nerve injury. The present study investigated how losartan treatment may affect the development of neuropathic pain and neuroinflammation.Main methodsThe effect of losartan treatment on the development of peripheral neuropathy was studied in L5 spinal nerve ligation (SNL) model in rats with systemic (100 mg/kg) or intrathecal (10 μl/ 20 μM ...

ConclusionRadicular pain occurring during micturition, defecation or orgasm is a rare condition. The most common underlying lesion seems to be radiculopathy, from lumbar to sacral spine. The presence of these symptoms, in the absence of any known neurological condition, should suggest the practitioner a radiculopathy in most of the cases. In consequence, appropriate additional tests should be offered to these patients.SignificanceFew data is available on sciatica during micturition, defecation or orgasm. This study underlines the need for appropriate tests if a patient complaint from this symptom. Indeed, the most common u...

Conclusion: These exploratory findings indicate that patients with NeP across different etiologies are medically complex and experience impaired function across multiple domains. PMID: 30662281 [PubMed]

Conclusion: Evaluation of chronic pain patients in Brazil yielded a 14.5% probable NeP prevalence. NSAIDs and opioids were commonly used, and there was a high incidence of NeP-related symptoms with varying levels of dysfunction across subtypes. PMID: 30662280 [PubMed]

Conclusions: Our results suggest that SSM suppresses the production of inflammatory factors via the NF-κB pathway and accelerates the morphological and functional recovery of the peripheral nervous system. Hence, SSM may be a useful therapeutic candidate for treatment of neuropathic pain diseases. PMID: 30647762 [PubMed]

ConclusionThis small multicenter retrospective case series provides preliminary evidence that the painful symptoms of general peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities, as well as associated pain medication usage, can be effectively managed by DRG stimulation at the L4 ‐S1 spinal level. Importantly, this treatment appears efficacious for peripheral neuropathy.

Conclusions: DCM symptoms are poorly identified by Web-based symptom checkers, which leads to a large differential of many other common conditions. While a diagnosis becomes more likely as the number of symptoms increases, this represents more advanced disease and will not support much-needed earlier diagnosis. Symptom checkers remain an attractive concept with potential. Further research is required to support their optimization.
