In-Hospital Outcomes of Rotational Atherectomy in High-Risk Patients With Severely Calcified Left Main Coronary Artery Disease: A Single-Center Experience.

We report our experience with RA for severely calcified LM-CAD. METHODS: From January 2008 to January 2017, all patients who underwent RA-assisted LM-PCI were evaluated. The study population included both protected and unprotected LM-CAD patients. Clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcomes were collected retrospectively. In-hospital outcomes included post-PCI myocardial infarction, stroke, death, emergency coronary artery bypass graft surgery, and urgent repeat PCI. Angiographic success was defined by residual stenosis

CONCLUSION: As reimbursement for emergency medicine in Germany was recently rearranged, quality benchmarking has gained incremental importance. Mandatory joint quality measurement in both concepts ensuring gap analysis and process improvement is encouraged. PMID: 31970463 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Goeder D, Oberhoffer R Abstract Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Apart from a few exceptions heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial occlusive disease first occur in later adulthood. The cornerstone for these diseases, however, is already laid by accelerated vascular aging in childhood. Apart from pediatric medical preventive check-ups, the medical care of the parents should also be a reason for taking action. A detailed family history enables many conclusions to be drawn about the cardiovascular risk of the next generation This requires targeted diagn...

ConclusionAbout two third of the patients had poor treatment outcome. Educational status and mean length of hospital stays were independent predictors of poor treatment out-comes. An emergency care setup capable of early patient evaluation, identification and management of stroke complications is crucial to overcome early stroke related mortality.

Authors: Taguchi A, Sakamoto S, Okazaki T, Oshita J, Kuwabara M, Kurisu K Abstract BACKGROUND: Several recent randomized controlled trials have reported that perioperative complications of carotid artery stenting increase with age, and Japan has the highest proportion of elderly in the world. We retrospectively compared clinical factors, treatment outcomes, and adverse events between younger and elderly carotid artery stenting patients at a single institution in Japan to assess carotid artery stenting safety for the aged population. METHODS: A total of 150 consecutive patients treated with carotid artery stenti...

AbstractPlatelet microvesicles (PMV) have previously been found elevated in acute ischemic stroke (IS) and could be biomarkers for risk of recurrence. PMV surface antigens such as P-selectin and phosphatidylserine (PS) reflect platelet activation and procoagulance. Tissue factor-positive microvesicles (TF+MV) are considered procoagulant, in particular if co-expressing PS. We enumerated MV subpopulations with these surface antigens in a cohort of 211 patients with primarily non-cardioembolic IS or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and investigated their association with long-term outcome. MV concentrations were determined by ...

CONCLUSION: In real-world patients at high risk of bleeding, implantation of the polymer-free metallic stent coated with Biolimus-A9 (Biofreedom®; Biosensors Europe, Morges, Switzerland) followed by 1 -month DAPT showed encouraging results without any stent thrombosis. Conclusions: Mildly abnormal baseline lipid levels were associated with an increased future risk of ASCVD events, particularly MI, whereas measures of lipid variability were not. Therefore, in young adults, achieving optimal lipid levels could be valuable in the prevention of ASCVD. PMID: 31978313 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

High blood pressure: A common diagnosis, that shows hardly any symptoms, but can be deadly. Hardened arteries and blood forced too hard against artery walls can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Fortunately, there are lifestyle improvements that can lower blood pressure and potentially save your life.
