It was 80 years ago, on May 2, 1939, when Lou Gehrig (1903-1941), the legendary baseball player, took himself out of the New York Yankees lineup unable to perform well due to progressive motor weakness. Thus ended Gehrig's 2,130 consecutive game playing streak, which had begun on June 1, 1925.
