Zika Virus: What Emergency Nurses Need to Know
Source: Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). Published: 8/2018. This two-page infographic discusses the Zika virus, its signs and symptoms, how it is treated, how it can be transmitted, and what emergency nurses should tell their patients about it. It also provides triage tips, and fast facts about the virus. (PDF)
In this study, we evaluated the mRNA expression of innate immune receptors (TLR3, TLR7, TLR8, TLR9, melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5/MDA-5, and reti noic acid inducible gene/RIG-1), its adapter molecules (Myeloid Differentiation Primary Response Gene 88/Myd88,Toll/IL-1 Receptor Domain-Containing Adaptor-Inducing IFN- β/TRIF), and cytokines (IL-6, IL-12, TNF-α, IFN-α, IFN-β, and IFN-γ) in the acute phase of patients infected by ZIKV using real-time PCR in peripheral blood. Patients with acute ZIKV infection had high expression of TLR3, IFN-α, IFN-β, and IFN-γ when co...

CONCLUSIONS Our results allowed the characterization of pregnant women exposed to ZIKV and the outcome of pregnancy.
The new triterpene friedelan-1,3,21-trione, the known compounds friedelan-3-one, 3 β -friedelinol, 3,4-seco-friedelan-3-oic acid, 28-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, friedelan-3-oxo-28-al, friedelan-3,21-dione, 30-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, a mixture of 30-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one/21 α -hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, 21 β -hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, gutta-percha, squalene, and a mixture of palmitic/stearic/oleic acids were isolated from the hexane extracts of leaves and branches of T. micrantha. Their chemical structures were established by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography (GC), 1D/2D nuclear magn...
aacute;n Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging mosquito-borne member of the Flaviviridae family that has historically been known to cause sporadic outbreaks, associated with a mild febrile illness, in Africa and Southeast Asia [...]

Between January and October 2016, 575 symptomatic confirmed cases of Zika virus infection were reported in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Preventing unintended pregnancy among women who choose to delay or avoid pregnancy is a primary strategy to reduce these adverse outcomes.
By targeting a protein found in the saliva of mosquitoes that transmit Zika, Yale investigators reduced infection in mice, offering new hope for a vaccine.
AbstractIndividuals are often at increased risk of acquiring infectious disease while traveling. We sought to understand knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding Zika virus among travelers from the United States. A total of 1043 study participants were recruited from a probability-based internet panel. Participants self-reported their knowledge of Zika infection and modes of transmission, and identified actions they had taken to prevent Zika infection and transmission including actions to prevent unintentional pregnancy since becoming aware of the Zika virus. Logistic regression was used to model the odds of taki...
