Discussion of “The Relationship between Childhood Maltreatment and Psychopathology in Adults Undergoing Bariatric Surgery”

Childhood maltreatment, which includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as neglect, is a significant, worldwide public health issue. Childhood maltreatment can profoundly affect child development. A single incident of abuse or the cumulative effects of chronic neglect can reverberate into and throughout adulthood, potentially increasing risk for cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, cancer, pulmonary disease, tobacco and alcohol use [1]. The association between childhood maltreatment and psychopathology are well established [2].
