Successful lung transplantation in a patient with Niemann-Pick disease

It is with great interest we read the case report entitled “Lung transplantation in a patient with Niemann-Pick disease” by Mannem H et al.1 Unfortunately, the patient died within 30 days of lung transplantation from acute lung injury due to pro-inflammatory state caused by flooded recipient-derived abnormal macrophage in the lungs. The authors conclude d that transplanting patients with orphan lung condition like Niemann-Pick Disease carries a higher risk of complications since the effect of the underlying disease on the post-operative course is difficult to predict.
