Thyroid function after hypofractionated adjuvant radiotherapy for localized breast cancer.

CONCLUSION: Although hypofractionation theoretically exposes the thyroid gland to late radiotherapy complications, radiation-induced dysthyroidism remains a complication underestimated by clinicians, and in the absence of prevention and treatment guidelines, it is necessary to delineate systematically the thyroid gland, to try to minimize as much as possible the doses received by this organ, and to monitor the thyroid function by periodic serum assays. Abstract The aim of the present study was to compare radiation dose received by thyroid gland using different radiotherapy (RT) techniques with or without thyroid dose constraint (DC) for breast cancer patients. Computerized tomography (CT) image sets for 10 patients with breast cancer were selected. All patients were treated originally with opposite tangential field-in field (FinF) for the chest wall and anteroposterior fields for the ipsilateral supraclavicular field. The thyroid gland was not contoured on the CT images at the time of the original scheduled treatment. Four new treatment plans were created for ea...

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death. The prevalence of colorectal neoplasm is increasing. Many studies have shown that thyroid dysfunction may be connected with the higher risk of pancreatic and breast cancer, but only a few described the role of thyroid dysfunction and thyroid hormone (TH) replacement in the development and risk of CRC. The aim of this study is to summarise all findings and potentially elucidate the connection between TH imbalance and colorectal cancer. The systematic review was conducted according to PICO and PRISMA guidelines. We searched MEDLINE...

This study is a post-hoc analysis of steroid hormones before and after administration of pharmacological doses of soy isoflavones in a large cohort of men and women from two independent studies. Isoflavones are reported to inhibit mineralo- and glucocorticoid hormone production as well as reproductive steroids in vivo and in vitro. We focused on cytochrome P450 17α-hydroxylase (CYP17A1) which catalyses the production of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), in the androgen biosynthesis pathway to elucidate effects on sex steroids in vitro. Design and Setting: Effects of soy isoflavones on steroid levels in two studies comp...

Abstract Background: Cancer survivors suffer from many comorbid conditions even after the cure of their cancers beyond 5 years. We explored the differences in the association of comorbid conditions between the cancer survivors and patients without cancer. Methods: Electronic medical records of 280 adult cancer survivors and 280 age-matched patients without cancer in our suburban internal medicine office were reviewed. Results: Mean age of the cancer survivors was 72.5 ± 13.1 years, and the age of the patients without cancer was 72.5 ± 12.8 years. The number of male cancer survivors was sign...

Conclusion: Screening breast cancer patients for thyroid function status at baseline and serially post-treatment to evaluate the need for thyroid hormone replacement may provide for a novel strategy for treating chemotherapy-induced fatigue. PMID: 29876020 [PubMed]

ConclusionThis study demonstrated that thyroid gland is affected by radiotherapy significantly and the TSH increased after radiotherapy. Protecting thyroid gland during radiation and follow-up of patients with breast cancer RT are suggested for the assessment of thyroid gland dysfunction.

AbstractThere is preclinical and recent epidemiological evidence that thyroid hormone supports breast cancer. These observations raise the issue of whether management of breast cancer in certain settings should include consideration of reducing the possible contribution of thyroid hormone to the advancement of the disease. In a preliminary experience, elimination of the clinical action of endogenous L-thyroxine (T4) in patients with advanced solid tumors, including breast cancer, has favorably affected the course of the cancer, particularly when coupled with administration of exogenous 3,5,3 ′-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3...

Abstract Despite evidence linking thyroxin use and breast cancer, little is known regarding the risk of other cancers with thyroxin use. The purpose of this case-control study was to evaluate the association of thyroid cancer with primary hypothyroidism based on a population-based database. The data for this case-control study were retrieved from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005. We included 1285 patients with thyroid cancer as cases and 3855 sex- and age-matched subjects as controls. We used conditional logistic regression to examine the association of thyroid cancer with previously diagnose...
