Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis associated with Burkholderia pseudomallei peritonitis.

We report a rare case of an end-stage renal disease patient on regular continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (PD) who developed melioidosis PD peritonitis. Within a short period of time, she developed encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis evidenced by the intraoperative findings of intraabdominal cocooning. Choice and duration of antibiotic are important for proper eradication of the organism. Early diagnosis and treatment of both conditions also may improve the prognoses. ConclusionThe regulatory pathway of axon regeneration involving nerve growth related factors and low intensity pulsed ultrasound was initially established, which provided a theoretical basis for further study of axon regeneration, and also new ideas for action of low intensity pulsed ultrasound on axon regeneration regulatory pathway.

Facial transplantation is emerging as a therapeutic option for self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The self-inflicted nature of this injury raises questions about the appropriate role of self-harm in determining patient eligibility. Potential candidates for fac...

Prompted by the statements of anti-tobacco groups throughout the country claiming that vaping causes popcorn lung, a new organization was launched this past Thursday to confront this new and alarming epidemic among young people. The organization is called the American Popcorn Lung Association (APLA) and it has aTwitter feed (@LungPopcorn)." Popcorn lung " is a serious, progressive lung disease that is technically known as bronchiolitis obliterans. The disease results in obstruction of the smallest airways in the lung. The disease is irreversible and can be fatal. A lung transplant is the only definitive treatment...

In conclusion, we show here that sEVs are responsible for mediating paracrine senescence and speculate that they could be involved in inducing bystander senescence during therapy-induced senescence or aging. In fact, when compared to soluble factors, sEVs have different biophysical and biochemical properties as they have a longer lifespan than do soluble factors and they are more resistant to protease degradation. The idea that blocking sEV secretion could be a potential therapeutic approach to alleviate senescence "spreading" during chemotherapy-induced senescence or in aging tissues presents itself as a very at...

This study analysed the spatiotemporal patterns and clusters of laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV cases reported in Saudi Arabia between June 2012 and March 2019. Temporal, seasonal, spatial and spatiotemporal cluster analyses were performed using Kulldorff’s spatial scan statistics to determine the time period and geographical areas with the highest MERS-CoV infection risk. A strongly significant temporal cluster for MERS-CoV infection risk was identified between April 5 and May 24, 2014. Most MERS-CoV infections occurred during the spring season (41.88%), with April and May showing significant seasonal clusters. Wa...

Conclusions/SignificanceOur data indicate that CLH001 serves as an effective live attenuated vaccine to prevent glanders and melioidosis. The quantity and quality of antibody responses as well as improving cell-mediated immune responses following vaccination need to be further investigated prior to advancement to preclinical studies.

In this study, we have investigated the effects of this compound in vitro, in a model of oxidative stress induced in HepG2 cells by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and in vivo, in a rat model of IRI of the liver. GIT-27NO significantly counteracted the toxic effects induced by the H2O2 on the HepG2 cells and in vivo, GIT-27NO reduced the transaminase levels and the histological liver injury by reducing necrotic areas with preservation of viable tissue. These effects were almost similar to that of the positive control drug dimethyl fumarate. These data suggest that the beneficial effect of GIT-27NO in the hepatic IRI can be secon...

Authors: Zhan X, Yang M, Chen Y, Zhang L, Yan C, Wang Y Abstract Objective: Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that dialysis patients are at increased risk for stroke. However, the impact of dialysis modalities on stroke risk remains controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) on stroke risk. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science was performed to identify articles comparing the stroke outcomes of dialysis patients. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were extracted...
