When to order a CT scan for odontogenic infections

This letter is in reference to the recent article by Weyh et al.1 Overall, this was an excellent retrospective cross-sectional analysis that illustrated the issue of computed tomography (CT) overutilization in the emergency department (ED) for odontogenic infections. They found that 56.6% of the CT scans were unnecessarily ordered at a Florida institution. They also found that CT imaging was done for localized vestibular space infections, which is eye-opening. Weyh et al. mention that there have been no other studies investigating CT scan overuse in odontogenic infections.
