Causal Role of Bile Acids in Irritable Bowel  Syndrome–Constipation

Vijayvargiya et  al1 from the Mayo Clinic have provided the first mass spectrometric analysis of fecal bile acids in constipated women (irritable bowel syndrome with constipation [IBS-C]) and compared their results with similar measurements in healthy control subjects. They concluded that there is a subset of cons tipated patients who have decreased fecal bile acid output and altered fecal bile acid composition. In particular, the proportion of deoxycholic acid, known to be the dominant fecal bile acid in humans, was decreased.
