Psychological Trauma: The Silent Stalker

Conclusion We must take steps to recognize psychological trauma among our partners and ourselves, establish a supportive culture of understanding and help seeking, and realize that we are ineffective in caring for others if we do not first help ourselves. Authors: Opel N, Cearns M, Clark S, Toben C, Grotegerd D, Heindel W, Kugel H, Teuber A, Minnerup H, Berger K, Dannlowski U, Baune BT Abstract Background: Preliminary research suggests that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with structural alterations in the brain; as well as with low-grade peripheral inflammation. However, even though a link between inflammatory processes and altered brain structural integrity has been purported by experimental research, well-powered studies to confirm this hypothesis in patients with MDD have been lacking. We aimed to investigate the potential association between struc...

Authors: Barton BB, Zagler A, Engl K, Rihs L, Musil R Abstract The information on prevalence of obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular risk (CVR) and on sociodemographic variables available in patients with psychiatric diseases about to be treated with weight gain-associated medication (e.g., clozapine, mirtazapine, quetiapine) is limited. In a naturalistic study, psychiatric inpatients (age: 18-75) of all F diagnoses according to ICD-10, who were about to be treated with weight gain-associated medication, were included. Demographic variables were assessed as well as biological parameters t...

CONCLUSIONS: CES-D is a valid and reliable scale for detecting caregiver depression in dementia. It has added utility, beyond that of a caregiver burden scale, in identifying a subgroup of caregivers with depression but not burden. However, two subscales (Positive affect and Interpersonal problems) may require caution in interpretation among non-Caucasian caregivers. PMID: 31307034 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Oon-Arom A, Wongpakaran T, Satthapisit S, Saisavoey N, Kuntawong P, Wongpakaran N Abstract Attachment styles reflect interpersonal relationship patterns in many ways. Although there is increasing evidence regarding the relationship between attachment styles and suicidality in adults, few studies have been conducted among the elderly population. Present study aims to investigate the link between attachment style and risk of suicidality in elderly people. A secondary analysis of cross-sectional data among geriatric outpatients at psychiatric clinics in xxxx with respect to whether patients had depressive dis...

This study answers this call by developing and evaluating the benefits of a peer-led compassionate meditation program to help students of color heal from race-related stress. To date, no studies have examined whether compassionate meditation (a specific type of meditation) can be used as a therapeutic tool to address racial stress. This article discusses the formative process for developing and pilot-testing the effects of this culturally responsive 8-session compassionate meditation program with Asian American college students. Despite a small sample size, results were promising. and participants evidenced decreases in ge...

This article specifically focuses on identifying the mechanisms of action that were responsible for improving mental health and well-being among those who participated in AWARE randomized controlled trial. Of the 435 women screened for the study, 63 Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese women with histories of interpersonal violence were randomized into either the intervention (n = 32) or waitlist control groups (n = 31). Data from 16 posttrial focus group sessions were then thematically analyzed to explore the key themes and mechanisms of action of the AWARE intervention. Analysis revealed four cultural mechanisms that facilita...

Authors: Hahm HC, Zhou L, Lee C, Maru M, Petersen JM, Kolaczyk ED Abstract To our knowledge, Asian Women's Action for Resilience and Empowerment (AWARE) is the first gender- and culture-specific and trauma-informed group psychotherapy intervention designed for Asian-American young women with histories of interpersonal violence and trauma and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnosis. We employed a 2-arm randomized controlled trial. Sixty-three women who met clinical criteria for trauma were randomized to the intervention (n = 32) or waitlist control (n = 31) group. We documented retention rates, preliminar...
