RARITAN, NJ, February 10, 2020 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson &Johnson announced today the submission of a supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval of DARZALEX® (daratumumab) in combination with Kyprolis® (carfilzomib) and dexamethasone (DKd) for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. Background: Variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is common in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, poor access to endoscopy services precludes the diagnosis of varices. Objectives: We determined the diagnostic accuracy of routine clinical findings for detection of esophageal varices among patients with UGIB in rural SSA where schistosomiasis is endemic. Methods: We studied patients with a history of UGIB. The index tests included routine clinical findings and the reference test was diagnostic endoscopy. Multivariable regression with post-estimation provided measures of association and diagnostic accuracy. Results: We...

AbstractMethotrexate (MTX) forms the backbone of maintenance cycles in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) chemotherapy, including interim maintenance. There is sufficient published data describing toxicities of high dose MTX  (HD-MTX), but toxicities with escalating doses of MTX (Capizzi regimen) is not well documented. Capizzi regimen is thought to be relatively safe; we contend that even low escalating doses of MTX have significant toxicities. Our study intends to characterise such events with Capizzi MTX in comparis on to that seen with HD-MTX. The retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary...

AbstractTo study the clinico-haematological and histopathological characteristics ofFIP1L1-PDGFRA rearranged hypereosinophilia/hypereosinophilic syndrome (F/P+ve HE/HES), a retrospective analysis of patients with F/P+ve HE diagnosed over a period of 43  months was performed. Peripheral blood smears, bone marrow aspirate (BMA) and biopsies (BMB) were reviewed in each case and; reticulin stain and immunohistochemistry for mast cell tryptase (MCT) and CD117 was performed. F/P+ve HE was diagnosed in a total of ten patients during study period. All pa tients were males with a median age of 36 years (23–44 y...

CONCLUSIONS: The FOLFOX6 regimen and DCF regimen as NACT combined with radical gastrectomy have curative effects in treating locally advanced gastric cancer, preferable clinical response rate and disease control rate can be obtained, and the adverse reactions of the chemotherapy are tolerable. The patients receiving the FOLFOX6 regimen show a better tolerance, manifesting that the FOLFOX6 regimen is safer, which is worthy of clinical popularization. PMID: 31786868 [PubMed - in process]

We describe cases of four patients who presented respiratory symptoms and fever. All four patients were in regular conditions on hospital admission, after which they required intensive care and ventilatory support. Upon admission, three cases showed evidence of pleuropulmonary complication. Penicillin-sensitive Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated in all cases. All patients presented anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, schistocytes on peripheral blood smear, and hyperazotemia. They required blood transfusion and renal replacement therapy during their hosp italization. The patients were diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrom...

Publication date: Available online 4 October 2019Source: Journal of Cardiology CasesAuthor(s): Toru Yoshizaki, Toru Naganuma, Sunao NakamuraAbstractA 69-year-old female Jehovah’s Witness was diagnosed with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (AS). Because the patient, who refused blood transfusion for religious reasons, had multiple comorbidities, such as thrombocytopenia due to liver cirrhosis, esophageal varices, and an old cerebral infarction, a decision to perform transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) was made. Preprocedural computed tomography showed a small aortic root and severe leaflet calcification, ...
