Low dose effects challenge the evaluation of endocrine disrupting chemicals

Publication date: Available online 13 December 2018Source: Trends in Food Science & TechnologyAuthor(s): Laura N. VandenbergAbstractEndocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are found in a range of consumer products including food and food packaging. Both observational and experimental studies suggest that EDCs present in food and consumer products can contribute to diseases. This commentary reviews the current state of knowledge on EDCs including the available infrastructure to evaluate these compounds and limitations to standardized tests used in regulatory toxicology. I then identify the research and technological needs that should be addressed to improve the study of EDCs. Finally, I describe steps that could be taken in the short- and long-term to begin to meet these needs.
