Screening, prevention and management of osteoporosis among Canadian adults.

CONCLUSION: A large proportion of Canadians at risk for osteoporosis-those with a major fracture history-are not undergoing bone density testing nor are they engaging in lifestyle approaches known to help maintain healthy bones. This study provides the historical information required to evaluate whether the latest clinical practice guidelines have had an impact on osteoporosis care in Canada. NEW YORK (Reuters Health)—Anti-fracture medications do not reduce overall mortality in older patients with osteoporosis, according to an updated systematic review and meta-analysis. “This meta-analysis suggests drug treatments, including treatment with bisphosphonates, for osteoporosis should be recommended only for the prevention of fracture and not for any additional reduction in mortality,” researchers write in JAMA... This study aimed to investigate the effects of the water extract of D. roosii (WDR) on bone loss and obesity in ovariectomized (OVX) mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Body weight, gonadal fat weight, histological findings, and morphometric parameters in trabecular bone were evaluated after OVX mice were treated with WDR and HFD for four weeks. The receptor activator of nuclear κ-B ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) was examined. Phytochemical identification of WDR using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was perform...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe goal of the review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of the mechanisms underlying variation in human stature.Recent FindingsHuman height is an anthropometric trait that varies considerably within human populations as well as across the globe. Historically, much research focus was placed on understanding the biology of growth plate chondrocytes and how modifications to core chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation pathways potentially shaped height attainment in normal as well as pathological contexts. Recently, much progress has been made to improve our un...

Background: Patients with pemphigus (PEM) and bullous pemphigoid (BP) have risk factors for decreased bone mineral density including long-term use of systemic corticosteroids and chronic inflammation. Few studies examined the associations of PEM and BP with osteoporosis and fractures. We sought to determine whether PEM and BP are associated with osteoporosis and fracture in the US population.

Performance of fracture risk assessment tool in HIV-positive male individuals aged ≥45 years on suppressive antiretroviral therapy. J Int AIDS Soc. 2019 Aug;22(8):e25383 Authors: Tsai MS, Zhang JY, Sun HY, Liu WC, Wu PY, Yang CJ, Hung CC Abstract INTRODUCTION: An age-specific evaluation and management algorithm for reduced bone mineral density (BMD) is suggested for HIV-positive patients without major risk factors. Whether combination of BMD and the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) may detect more individuals for therapeutic interventions remains unclear. We aimed to determine the prevalenc...

ABSTRACTCessation of denosumab treatment is associated with increases in bone turnover above baseline values and rapid bone loss. We investigated the efficacy of zoledronate to prevent this bone loss in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis who were treated with denosumab (mean duration 2.2  years) and discontinued treatment after achieving osteopenia. Women were randomized to receive a single zoledronate 5 mg infusion (n = 27) or two additional denosumab 60 mg injections (n = 30). Both groups were followed for a total period of 24 months. At 24 months LS‐BMD was no...

This study is to examine the effect of Asiatic acid (AA) in osteoclastic differentiation, and further to investigate its effect on bone quality in animals. Effect of AA on osteoclastic differentiation was measured by Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase stain, bone resorption pit assays, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF- κB) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling were measured by western blot before and after AA treatment. Ovariectomized (OVX) wild-type or Smad7 partially knock out mice were used to evaluate t...
