A systematic review of the risk factors for suicidal ideation, suicidal attempt and completed suicide among children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa between 1986 and 2018: protocol for a systematic review of observational studies

DiscussionThis protocol describes a systematic review of observational studies reporting completed suicide, suicidal ideation and suicidal attempt among children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. We anticipate that once this review is complete and published, our findings will be of interest to adolescents with suicidal behaviour, their families and caregivers, clinicians and other healthcare professionals, scientists and policy makers.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO International prospective register of systematic reviews:CRD42016048610.

Conclusions: DUIMS indicates higher mortality, and DUIMS' profiles in causes of death differ from the general population. Elevated risk for, for instance, suicidal, accidental and violent death among those using multiple substances highlights the need to also pay attention to causes of death other than poisoning/overdose. Having a concussion within the past year may raise the risk of suicidal ideation and behavior in high school students, according to astudy in theJournal of Affective Disorders.Dale S. Mantey, M.P.A., of the University of Texas School of Public Health and colleagues used data from more than 13,000 respondents in grades 9 through 12 who participated in the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS). The national YRBSS is conducted every two years by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor health behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth a...

ConclusionsCause of death of the male corpse was deemed to be due to heroin intoxication as the blood concentration of morphine was more than the lethal concentration with a morphine/codeine ratio of more than 1:1. Methomyl intoxication of the male corpse was unlikely to be the cause of death because methomyl systemic blood concentration was found to be very low,

Between 1991 and 2017, the rate of black adolescents who reported attempting suicide rose, according to areport published Monday inPediatrics. This trend was not seen in adolescents who identified as white, Hispanic, Asian American or Pacific Islander, or being of multiple races.“Examining trends in suicidal ideation and behaviors over time by sex and race and ethnicity allows us to determine where to focus prevention and intervention efforts,” wrote Michael A. Lindsey, Ph.D., M.S.W., M.P.H., of New York University and colleagues.Lindsey and colleagues analyzed data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) &m...

We sought to identify trends in overdoses with over-the-counter (OTC) dextromethorphan (DXM) cough preparations among adolescents from a national poison center surveillance database. Our objective was to identify both severity of outcomes and trends in adolescent suicide attempts with OTC DXM cough preparations.

Conclusions: The risks of SA and SDO were proportionally increased by head injury in patients with depression in Taiwan. Our findings provide crucial information to implement efficient suicide prevention strategies in the future.

CONCLUSIONS: It is reassuring that the absolute number of prescription drug suicides in non-abusers was small; the findings, however, are important because they could serve as a baseline for assessing time trends in future studies. For the present, we suggest that prescription drugs of potential abuse, especially those containing opioids and antispasmodics, should be prescribed and dispensed judiciously, especially to youth. ng Lijun Li The detection of difenidol hydrochloride, which is a drug that is widely used for treating the nausea and vomiting symptoms caused by certain diseases, has been increasingly involved in cases of suicide via overdosing and of drug poisoning in children. A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the simple and effective detection of difenidol hydrochloride was fabricated by modifying a glassy carbon electrode with three-dimensional carbon nanofibers (3D-CNFs). The 3D-CNFs were synthesized by electrospinning a mixture of montmorillonite (MMT) and polyacrylonitrile, carbonizing the electrospun product...

Authors: Yaylac─▒ F, Küçük Ö, Erkuran HÖ Abstract Paliperidone is a relatively novel atypical antipsychotic drug that is currently used to treat schizophrenia in adolescents and adults. The drug was generated by combining the active metabolite of risperidone, 9-hydroxyrisperidone, with osmotic controlled-release oral administration system (OROS) technology. Due to its specific design, the drug has been identified as a different form, albeit an active metabolite of risperidone. Such distinction mainly manifests itself during pharmacokinetic processes, because paliperidone is not affected b...

According to the latest numbers, roughly 9 million Americans — 4% of U.S. adults — use prescription sleep aids, or medications that can help with insomnia and other sleep issues. And now, some of the most popular prescription sleep drugs must carry stronger safety warnings. In April, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated black-box warnings — which the agency uses to “call attention to serious or life-threatening risks” — on three sedative-hypnotic sleep aids: eszopiclone (often sold under the brand name Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata) and zolpidem (Ambien). Hypnotic drugs, which ar...
