A case series of cementless revision total knee arthroplasty in patients with benzoyl peroxide allergy

ConclusionsThe regression of complaints after replacement with cementless and nickel-free revision implants suggests allergic implant intolerance. Implantation of a cementless, hypoallergenic endoprosthesis might, therefore, be a surgical treatment strategy in patients with evidence of allergies.

Of the 8,000 Californians who will contract Valley Fever this year, most will recover without treatment, and those with more serious cases will require an antifungal medication that clears the infection. But a few will experience a life-threatening form of the disease that ravages the body for reasons unknown. Now, an experimental treatment used by physicians atUCLA Mattel Children ’s Hospital that cured a 4-year-old boy may provide an explanation — and a method for manipulating the immune system to combat not just Valley Fever, but a host of infections. In February 2018, the Gonzalez-Martinez family traveled 200...

CONCLUSION: We present the case of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to hypersensitivity to fentanyl with good tolerance to buprenorphine. Positive PT in this patient suggests a type IV hypersensitivity mechanism. Allergic reactions to opioids are frequently immediate, but delayed reactions could appear, especially when the drug is administered topically. PMID: 31131754 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In this study we used HPLC and LC/MS analysis, combined with a BATMAN-TCM platform, for detailed HPLC fingerprint analysis and network pharmacology of QP, and investigated the anti-inflammatory and antipruritic activities of QP on ACD induced by squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE) in mice. The BATMAN-TCM analysis provided information of effector molecules of the main ingredients of QP, and possible chronic dermatitis-associated molecules and cell signaling pathways by QP. In ACD mice, QP treatment suppressed the scratching behavior induced by SADBE in a dose-dependent manner and inhibited the production of Th1/2 cytokines in...

Discussion There are numerous microbial communities inhabited in the human body, which is critical to human health. The relationship between human microbiome and diseases received much attention from both medical and bioinformatics community recently. However, traditional methods to detect their association is costly and labor-intensive. Thus, we proposed here a new computational model called NBLPIHMDA to infer potential microbe-disease associations. NBLPIHMDA first combined known microbe-disease associations in HMDAD and the Gaussian interaction profile kernel similarity to construct disease similarity network and microb...

Objectives We surveyed women from a primary care population to assess the prevalence of unreported vulvovaginal symptoms. Materials and Methods A random sample of women aged 18 to 84 years without a diagnosis of vulvovaginitis or vulvodynia in the past year were surveyed anonymously about prevalence and severity of vulvar and vaginal symptoms of itching, burning, irritation, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, and vulvovaginal pain in the past month. Women reporting at least 1 moderate-severe symptom were considered symptomatic. Demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between women with and without symp...

Abstract Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disease isolated to the esophagus Food allergy is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of EOE. The aim of this study is to evaluate demographic features and sensitivity of patients with reference to common food allergens. Children with documented EoE were enlisted for this study. Skin prick test and patch test were done for all participants. Each test contained common food allergens. Other tests, such as evaluation of total IgE and eosinophil count, were also done. A total of 30 patients (the mean age of participants was 3&plu...

Authors: Jauregui JJ, Desai SJ, Hodges V, Hariharan A, Newman JM, Adib F, Maheshwari AV Abstract BACKGROUND: Lower extremity total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is one of the most successful orthopaedic procedures. However, it is estimated that as many as 10% to 20% of TJAs could fail due to various well-known causes. Furthermore, metal allergy-related complications have recently gained attention as one of the potential causes of failure when the common reasons have been excluded. Reported symptoms from metal allergy can include chronic eczema, joint effusions, joint pain, and limited range of motion. Few studies have e...

We read with great interest the article by Vakharia et al1 in a recent issue of the Annals. The prospective study comprehensively addresses an overlooked aspect of the sensory symptoms associated with atopic dermatitis (AD). In 305 patients with AD, the study reported that pain was found in 42.7% and that 30.2% rated the cutaneous pain intensity as being moderate to very severe. This pain incidence is aligned with a previous study on the AD itch characteristics.2 Vakharia et al1 consistently found cutaneous pain to be associated with reduced quality of life (including: Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure, ItchyQOL, and Dermato...

Conclusions: Maternal exposure to indoor environmental NO2 causes allergic asthma-related consequences in offspring absent any subsequent lung provocation and potentiates the symptoms of allergic asthma in adult offspring following postnatal allergic sensitization and challenge; this response is associated with the Th2-based immune response and DNA methylation of the IL4 gene. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP685 Received: 19 June 2016 Revised: 07 June 2017 Accepted: 19 June 2017 Published: 13 September 2017 Address correspondence to N. We read with great interest the landmark article by Gaul1 in which 16 individuals with positive patch test results to nickel received additional patch testing to inorganic and organic substances and more than half developed multiple sensitivities after the primary nickel sensitization. Notably, the patients with multiple sensitivities had developed more extensive dermatoses, had higher recurrence rates (characterized by decreased pain sensation, uncontrollable pruritus, and chronic eczema), and required multiple hospitalizations.
