Drug repositioning strategy identifies potential anti-epilepsy drugs

(University of Iowa Health Care) Starting with human brain tissue from patients with epilepsy, University of Iowa researchers used gene expression profiling and bioinformatics to identify 91 FDA-approved drugs, that may also have potential as anti-epilepsy treatments. Testing showed three of drugs -- a diabetes drug, a hypertension medication, and an antiparasitic therapy -- significantly reduced seizure-like movement in zebrafish.
