Three-Dimensional Echocardiographic Evaluation of Right Ventricular Function in Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension: Finding Meaning in the “Forgotten”

THE RIGHT-SIDED cardiac chambers and ancillary structures have long been neglected in the medical literature. Even though these structures continue to wear the badge of “forgotten” structures, physicians have long known the clinical implications of right-sided cardiac dysfunction. From the practical differences in treating acute right ventricular (RV) dysfunction during an acute myocardial infarction to the lessons learned from the chronic, long-term challenges posed by the use of the Fontan palliation procedure in patients with nascent or absent right-sided cardiac structures, the clinical implications of right-sided cardiac disease cannot be ignored.
