Frequency and characteristics of drowsiness, somnolence, or daytime sleepiness in patients with advanced cancer. Palliat Support Care. 2018 Dec 04;:1-5 Authors: Yennuralingam S, Barla SR, Arthur J, Chisholm GB, Bruera E Abstract IntroductionCancer-related drowsiness (CRD) is a distressing symptom in advanced cancer patients (ACP). The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and factors associated with severity of CRD. We also evaluated the screening performance of Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale-drowsiness (ESAS-D) item against the Epworth Sedation Scale (ESS). METHOD: We prospectively assessed 180 consecutive ACP at a tertiary cancer hospital. Patients were surveyed using ESAS, ESS, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Insomnia Severity Index, and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale.ResultNinety of 150 evaluable patients had clinically significant CRD (ESS); median (interquartile ratio): ESS. 11 (7-14); ESAS-D. 5 (2-6); Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. 8 (5-11); Insomnia Severity Index. 13 (5-19); Stop Bang Scoring 3 (2-4), and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale-D 6 (3-10). ESAS-D was associated with ESAS (r, p) sleep (0.38,

Authors: Fournier E Abstract Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is too common a condition not to daily interact with the practitioner, if only because of its entanglement to other pathologies, causal or chance association. The typical symptomatology, with hand paresthesia and morning pain upon waking, is related to a median nerve injury in the confined space of the carpal tunnel, more often by local inflammation and tenosynovitis of the finger flexors (repetitive activity of the hands). SCC may be secondary to situations (pregnancy) or conditions (edema, hypothyroidism…), which exaggerate the ordinary pathophysiol...

However, CTCs being extremely rare in blood makes them difficult to reach. In this paper, we introduced different surface modification techniques for the enrichment and detection of MCF-7 in microfluidic biosensor applications using gold surface and EpCAM antibody. Mainly, two different mechanisms were employed to immobilize the antibodies; covalent b...

The model drug is tetrandrine (Tet). The chemical structure and properties of these NPs were characterized through systematic characterization analyses. Their drug loadi...

Dean, Elizabeth Valenti, Karen Hock, Julie Leffler, Amy Compston, William T. AbrahamAbstractBackgroundLower extremity lymphedema is frequently encountered in the vascular clinic. Established dogma purports that cancer is the most common cause of lower extremity lymphedema in Western countries, whereas chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is often overlooked as a potential cause. Moreover, lymphedema is typically ascribed to a single cause, yet multiple causes can coexist.MethodsA 3-year re...

The designed CST NPs possess excellent photothermal effect and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) induced photodynamic property, which could achieve synergistic photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Meanwhile, the photothermal ability of CST NPs acts as a key r...

The in vitro MMR assay is used to assess their MMR capability, likely the most important function of an MMR protein. However, the robustness of the assay, crucial for its use in the clinical setting, has been rarely evaluated. The aim of the present...
