Medical News Today: What to know about HAART for HIV

HAART refers to any treatment for HIV that uses two or more antiretroviral drugs. Also called combined antiretroviral therapy, this regimen revolutionized HIV treatment in 1996, making it possible to manage HIV long-term. HAART can use seven classes of medication and over 30 antiretroviral drugs.

Background: Although the HIV can cause myocardial inflammation, the association of HIV infection with subsequent development of heart failure (HF) has not been extensively studied. This nationwide cohort study aimed to determine the risk of incident HF in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Methods: We identified PLWHA using the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention HIV Surveillance System. An age- and sex-matched control group without HIV infection was selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for comparison. All patients were followed up until December 2014 and were observed f...

Scaling up of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in Uganda has improved survival of a cohort of children into adolescence. Adolescence is a turbulent period where experimental sexual behavior may occur. Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) with risky sexual behaviour are key players in transmitting HIV. We aimed at establishing the prevalence and factors associated with risky sexual behaviour among ALHIV in Mbarara, Uganda.

Abstract The main data on HIV in high-income countries from the standpoint of health economics are updated and discussed. Specifically, issues surrounding the economic impact of HIV are addressed for health care and occupational perspectives. We review the main epidemiological data on the prevalence of disease and foreseeable changes in patterns within the coming years. Recent research on health care costs of HIV/AIDS and the occupational situation of HIV+ people are discussed. In high-income countries, there is an incipient change in trends that indicate that an increasing percentage of the intermediate-age HIV+ ...

Abstract Malignancies were one of the earliest recognized manifestations that led to the description of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The majority of cancers in AIDS patients are associated with coinfection with oncogenic viruses, such as Epstein-Barr virus, human herpesvirus 8, and human papillomavirus, with resulting malignancies occurring secondary to diminished immune surveillance against viruses and virus-infected tumor cells. Over 50% of AIDS lymphomas are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and/or HHV8 infection. HHV8-associated diseases include Kaposi sarcoma (KS), primary ...

In this study, the cell viability of TDF-treated pheochromocytoma cells (PC-12) line was detected using MTT assay, while apoptosis was evaluated by Hoechst 33342 staining, TUNEL assay, as well as flow cytometry. In addition, the level of reactive oxygen species and BAX protein expression were evaluated using DCFH-DA staining and western blotting. The results showed that the proliferation of PC-12 cells was significantly inhibited by TDF. The morphological assay, TUNEL assay and flow cytometry showed that TDF efficiently triggered apoptosis in PC-12 cells. The reactive oxygen species levels were BAX expression was markedly ...

CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the importance of considering competing risks, and time-dependent biomarker in the survival model. MSM have higher hazard for cancer AIDS. CD4+ count is associated with both survival outcomes. PMID: 30520378 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: Specific health and HIV risk behaviors declined following seroconversion, especially with treatment availability and utilization. These positive behavior changes following HIV seroconversion provide evidence for continued investment in the HIV care continuum, including support for HIV testing and engagement in clinical care and treatment.
