We report a case of systemic oxalosis involving the eyes and joints due to long-term use of high-dose vitamin C in a patient receiving maintenance peritoneal dialysis (PD). This 76-year-old woman with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease underwent living unrelated kidney transplantation 10 years earlier. The transplant failed 6 months before presentation, and she initiated hemodialysis therapy before transitioning to PD therapy 4 months later. During the month before presentation, the patient noted worsening arthralgias and decreased vision. Ophthalmologic examination revealed proliferative retinopathy and calcium ...

Authors: Higazi HMKI, He L, Fang J, Sun F, Zhou Q, Huang T, He X, Wang Y, Xiong F, Yang P, Yu Q, Li J, Wagner KU, Adam BL, Zhang S, Wang CY Abstract Chronic rejection acts as the most formidable obstacle for organ transplantation in clinical settings. Herein we demonstrated in a cardiac transplantation model that blockade of Janus kinase 2 (Jak2) provides protection for cardiac allografts against chronic rejection. Specifically, loss of Jak2 almost completely abolished the production of IFN-γ+ Th1 cells, while the percentage of Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) was significantly increased. As a result, loss o...

This study compared ESWT, Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJMSCs) and combination of ESWT and WJMSCs therapies for early OA of the rat knee. The results showed ESWT, WJMSCs and combination of therapies significantly improved early OA knee based on analysis of pathological findings, micro-CT and immunohistochemistry (IHC) stain. The combined therapy group increased the bone volume (61.755 ± 1.537), and trabecular thickness (0.215 ± 0.014; P

This study defines a new clinically relevant concept of T-cell senescence-mediated inflammatory responses in the pathophysiology of abnormal glucose homeostasis. We also found that T-cell senescence is associated with systemic inflammation and alters hepatic glucose homeostasis. The rational modulation of T-cell senescence would be a promising avenue for the treatment or prevention of diabetes. Intron Retention via Alternative Splicing as a Signature of Aging In recent years researchers have inv...

Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrated that DJ stent removal within 14 days did not reduce the risk of UTI when compared to stent removal after 14 days. Similar effects on complication rates for ureteral stenting for these 2 removal periods were observed. PMID: 30899293 [PubMed]
