Drug dramatically reduces risk of dangerous blood clots in cancer patients

(The Ottawa Hospital) A large clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine provides the first approach for safely preventing blood clots (venous thromboembolism) in people with cancer. Venous thromboembolism is the second leading cause of death in cancer patients and it can also affect quality of life. About half of people newly diagnosed with a solid cancer could be candidates for the strategy, which involves a low dose of a direct oral anticoagulant called apixaban.
