The Alleged Health-Protective Effects of Coffee

To the Editor In their large prospective analyses, Loftfield and colleagues reported an inverse association between coffee drinking and mortality, and suggested a possible benefit even for those drinking 8 or more cups per day. We believe that there are issues with their analytical approach and that the seemingly protective association of coffee drinking is likely an artifact inflicted by reverse causation.
