Anxious and suicidal behaviors among relatives are associated with suicide attempts and hospitalizations in mood disorder subjects

Background: In individuals who suffer from mood disorders, suicidal behavior and psychiatric hospitalizations are used as indicators of illness severity. Both are considered highly detrimental to an individual's global functioning. Factors that increase the severity of a mood disorder are important to understand in order to develop interventions for prevention. Prior research has shown that having a relative with a psychiatric illness is a risk factor for developing the illness. However, the family members' specific disorders in addition to their history of suicidal behavior have not been examined with clinical severity outcomes such as suicide attempts and psychiatric hospitalizations.
