Neural mechanisms of non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal behavior in adolescent girls

Very little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in community dwelling adolescents, a potent and robust risk factor for adolescent suicidal behavior. To address this gap in our knowledge, we drew data from the baseline assessment of the Adolescent Development of Emotion and Personality Traits (ADEPT) project at Stony Brook University, an ongoing, 3-year multi-wave prospective study of 550 adolescent girls. All adolescent girls were assessed at baseline for NSSI, suicidal behavior, event-related potential (ERP) measures of neural mechanisms, and several well-established risk factors.
