Hyalohyphomycosis is a group of fungal infections caused by ubiquitous saprophytic fungi characterized by hyaline septate hyphae such as Fusarium, Scedosporium, Scopulariopsis, Penicillium marneffei, and Acremonium. Acremonium in immunocompetent individuals causes localized infection as keratitis, dermatophytosis and eumycetoma, while in immunocompromised subjects it is responsible for more severe infections including pneumonia, arthritis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, peritonitis, meningitis, and sepsis.

Vancomycin is one of the most commonly used antibiotics within acute care hospitals in the United States [1]. Current consensus guidelines recommend maintaining trough concentrations between 15 and 20  mg/L for deep–seated infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis and osteomyelitis [2]. While area under the curve (AUC) to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) has been linked to bactericidal activity of vancomycin, trough concentrations are used as a surrogate [2]. Despite troug h monitoring recommendations, limited clinical data demonstrate improvements in efficacy by targeting these higher trou...

This study describes ceftaroline use, AEs, and mortality in US Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospital patients.MethodsThis phase IV, population-based, epidemiologic study analyzed patients ≥18 years old who received one or more ceftaroline doses within 14 days of admission to 69 VHA hospitals in 41 US states/territories from 1 October 2010 to 30 September 2014. VHA repository data were linked using unique patient identifiers. Diagnoses and AEs were determined using ICD9-CM and CSS codes. Demographics, AEs within 30 days of therapy initiation, and all-cause in-hospital mortality were summarized usin...

Conclusions: Immunocompromised patients should be identified prior to treatment, and the small possibility of devastating complications should be thoughtfully weighed against the potential benefit of the procedure. Conservative management should be maximized initially, and if a procedure is done, strict asepsis must be maintained. Prophylaxis for S. aureus should be considered for immunocompromised patients undergoing interventional spine procedures.

This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of two such vaccines, one against one serogroup (serogroup C) and the other a quadrivalent vaccine targeting four serogroups (A, C, Y and W). Evaluation of amplification targets for the specific detection of Bordetella pertussis using real-time polymerase chain reactionBordatella pertussis, the causative organism leading to whooping cough, represents a considerable public health concern in Canada. However, the current method of detection of B pertussis may also lead to a positive result when other Bordatella strains, which do not represent a public health risk, are present...

In conclusion, it should be highlighted that the report of Kalkan Akcay et al. is not the first case report of Scedosporium apiospermum-related fungal keratitis in Turkey. We believe, hence, that correction of this misinformation would be beneficial for further studies. PMID: 24819276 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Human infection with group C Streptococcus is extremely rare and a select number of cases have been reported to cause acute pharyngitis, acute glomerulonephritis, skin and soft tissue infections, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, pneumonitis, and bacteremia. In pediatrics, this bacteria is known to cause epidemic food-borne pharyngitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, and meningitis, and has reportedly been isolated in the blood, meninges, sinuses, fingernail, peritonsillar abscess, and thyroglossal duct cyst, among others.
