Uptake of PHMB in a bacterial nanocellulose-based wound dressing: A feasible clinical procedure

In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the problem of increasing multidrug-resistant microbes and declared it one of the greatest threats to global health [1]. In the US 23,000 people die as a result of infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria annually [2]. Patients with a suppressed immune system, elderly patients, or patients with large wound areas such as burn victims are at particular risk of infections with multidrug-resistant bacteria. Burn victims have an especially high mortality when associated with infections and the risk of infection is elevated with a prolonged hospital stay[3].
