Nurse Practitioner Katie Parker reminds us how to keep little ones safe during winter driving.

Katie Parker, CPNPThe American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that bulky winter clothing, such as winter coats and snowsuits, are not worn underneath the harness of a car seat.  In the event of a car accident, fluffy padding flattens from the force which leaves extra space under the harness.  This puts the child at risk of slipping through the straps and being thrown from the seat.  Below are some tips to help keep your child safe and warm while traveling during the winter season.-Store the carrier portion of infant seats inside when not in use.  Keeping the seat at room temperature will reduce the loss of the child ' s body heat in the car.-Start early! Wintry driving conditions will require you to drive more slowly; make sure to allow enough time in your commute. -Dress your child in thin layers.  Close-fitting layers should be worn first, such as tights, leggings, and long-sleeved bodysuits.  Pants and a warmer top, like a sweater or thermal-knit shirt, should be applied next.  A thin fleece jacket can also be layered on top.  A general guideline is to have your infant wear what you are wearing, plus a layer.  Don ' t be afraid to add long underwear! This is a safe and warm layering option. -Remember cold weather accessories! Hats, mittens, and socks or booties will not interfere with car seat straps.-Make sure the straps of the car seat harness are tightened.  Multiple layers...
