Inferior Vena Cava Filters in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: Good Intentions, Dubious Outcomes

In 1967, Kazi Mobin-Udin was the first to report using a catheter-placed device within the inferior vena cava (IVC) to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) [1]; while revolutionary, his umbrella shaped device was prone to migration and venous thrombosis. The IVC filter (IVCF) developed by Lazar Greenfield in 1973 had fewer complications and by 1981, was developed into a true percutaneous filter, which did not require venotomy. The percutaneous Greenfield filter led to an increase in the indications for and the use of permanent IVC filters.
