Issue Highlights

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of complications, including infections, and this risk may be further increased by the medications used to treat IBD. To determine the incidence and risk factors for herpes zoster (HZ) in IBD and the effect of immunosuppression on that risk, Khan et  al1 used the Veterans’ Affairs (VA) database, analyzing data from 2000–2016 and identifying 2 retrospective cohorts for analysis. The first cohort study compared IBD patients on 5-ASA alone (n = 13,001) with>35,500 matched non-IBD patients.
