Effects of low-dose glucocorticoid prophylaxis on chronic GVHD and GVHD-free, relapse-free survival after haploidentical transplantation: long-term follow-up of a controlled, randomized open-label trial
Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is limited by the major lethal complication of acute and/or chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) [1-4]. Corticosteroids are an accepted primary therapy for both acute and chronic GVHD [5,6], which have also been successfully used for prophylaxis of acute GVHD [7-9]. Randomized studies have demonstrated that the addition of corticosteroids resulted in a statistically significant reduction of the cumulative incidence of grades II-IV acute GVHD [7,9-11].
