The Perils of Bridge to Transplantation in Patients on Continuous Flow LVADs

While overall heart transplantation outcomes and survival have clearly improved over the last several decades, the concomitant outcomes with primary graft dysfunction (PGD) have been less defined. The ISHLT Consensus Conference laid down the framework towards a common definition of PGD and highlighted the historical and contemporary variability in reported incidence across institutions.1 In the current era of increasing number of patients on LVAD support, it seems that various centers have experienced an increase in the incidence and severity of primary graft dysfunction PGD.
