Sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome in elderly obese patients : clinical and functional profiles

Introduction: Sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is defined by the repetitive occurrence of brief apneas during sleep. Our objective is to analyze the clinical and functional profiles of SAHS in elderly obese patientsPatients and methods: We performed a retrospective study of 63 elderly obese patients with SAHS. They were sent for body plethysmography. Anthropometric data and personal history were specified. Clinical data (cough, sputum, exercise dyspnea and nocturnal snoring) have been identified. The plethysmographic data were analyzed. Continuous positive pressure (CPAP) treatment was sought. Results: 63 patients were divided into 2 groups according to age: G1 ( 65 years, n = 12). The mean age of G1 was 50 years and of G2 was 72 years. The gender, body mass index (38.2±7.7 vs 37.9±5.58 kg/m²) and active smoking were similar in both groups. The elderly group had higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes. Sputum and chronic cough were more frequent among elderly patients with respectively (22.2% vs. 63.6% ; p

Authors: Scheen AJ Abstract Introduction: Sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have a complex relationship with the kidney so that their use in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has long been challenged.Areas covered: SGLT2is in patients with DKD are discussed: renal mechanisms of action, PK/PD characteristics, clinical use in patients with stage 3 DKD, effects on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria, cardiovascular and renal outcomes according to renal function, overall and renal safety, SGLT2is new place in updated guidelines.Expert o...

We assessed the renal safety of on-demand PrEP with TDF/FTC in HIV-1 uninfected men. METHODS: We used data from the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled ANRS-IPERGAY trial and its open-label extension conducted betwee...

Discussion “The agriculture industry is consistently ranked as one of the most hazardous industries in the United States with some of the highest rates of work related injuries and deaths. Agriculture is a unique profession in that children who live on farms are exposed to, and in participate in, the family business of farming. Moreover, children who work on their family farm fall outside the regulation of governmental safety and labor practices….There is often little separation between work areas and play or living areas, thus children living on or visiting a farm may be in close proximity to safety hazards. ...
